It is my own coinage, from a Twitter conversation with http://twitter.com/#!/sweder on the day after the disastrous general election last year. He thought that my choice of tie, both blue and gold, was a comment on the Tory-Lib Dem coalition that was emerging.

Thus the idea of cravatomancy, divination through one’s choice of neckwear, was born.

I think cravatomancy should be a real word - but what would be the definition?  Making magic with ties and neckerchiefs?  Or purely divination through the use of ties and neckerchiefs?  You walk down the street, and as you spot the random assortment of neck attire around you, a glimpse of the future is revealed…  I wish I had enough ties to wear a different one every day for a year.  Something to aspire to, i suppose.
